Aircond Smells Bad: What Each Smell Means (and the Real Fix)

By Mavis Eco Cool technicians · Updated 24 August 2026

An aircond should smell of nothing. When it smells of something, the smell itself is diagnostic — a musty odour is biological, a sour one is bacterial, and a burning one is electrical. In Malaysian humidity, the indoor unit is a nearly perfect incubator: dark, damp, warm when off, with a constant supply of dust for nutrients. Here is what each smell is telling you.

Musty or damp, strongest at startup

The classic, and by far the most common. Mould and biofilm grow on the wet evaporator coil, the blower wheel and the drain tray while the unit sits off; when it starts, the first minutes of airflow strip odour off those surfaces and deliver it to the room. If the smell fades after a few minutes, the growth is still moderate. If the room smells musty the whole time the aircond runs, the blower wheel is usually carpeted.

The real fix is physical removal. The growth lives on surfaces a filter rinse never touches — the deep coil fins, the blower cups, the tray under the coil. That is exactly what a chemical wash dismantles and cleans (from RM130 per wall-mount unit), and why the smell comes back within weeks when only the filters are washed. Unsure whether you need the full job? See chemical wash vs normal servicing.

Sour, vinegary or “old towel”

Bacterial rather than fungal — usually stagnant condensate. A part-blocked drain leaves water standing in the tray and the first bend of the drain pipe, and it ferments there. Often paired with occasional drips: the full drain story is in aircond leaking water. The fix is a drain flush and tray clean, included in a proper service (from RM90).

Burning, plastic or electrical

Different category — act now. A burning smell from the indoor unit or the condenser means insulation, a motor winding or a board is overheating. Switch the unit off at the breaker, not just the remote, and do not run it again until it has been checked. Paired with buzzing or clicking, treat it as urgent — the electrical side of aircond repair is exactly what free checking is for.

Faint chemical or sweetish smell

Rare, but worth knowing: refrigerant escaping can carry a faint chemical note, and it will always be paired with fading cooling performance. Smell plus warm air is a reason for a pressure test — the other clues are in the 6 gas leak signs.

Cigarettes, cooking and renovation smells

The coil and blower are washed by room air continuously, and porous dust layers absorb odour. Units in homes with indoor smoking, heavy cooking or fresh paint pick up the smell and give it back. The cure is the same physical clean — and it is honest to say the smell returns faster in those environments.

What does not work

One habit that genuinely helps between services: run the fan-only mode for ten minutes before switching off, so the coil dries instead of sitting wet overnight. Households with sensitive noses or asthma tend to notice coil mould earliest — another reason not to live with it. Service frequency guidance is in how often to service your aircond.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my aircond smell only when it first turns on?

Because the smell is stripping off mould and biofilm that grew on the wet coil and blower while the unit sat off. The first minutes of airflow carry it into the room, then it dilutes. It is the earliest stage of the problem — the growth is established but not yet heavy, and a proper wash now stops it becoming a permanent smell.

Can I spray disinfectant or freshener into my aircond?

Sprays reach the first centimetre of coil at best and none of the blower wheel, where most of the growth lives, so the smell returns almost immediately. Spraying liquids toward electronics also carries its own risk. The only fix that lasts is physically cleaning the coil, blower and tray.

Does a bad smell mean my aircond gas is leaking?

Almost never — refrigerant is close to odourless and a leak announces itself through weak cooling rather than smell. Musty and sour smells are biological, from the coil and the drain. A faint chemical smell paired with fading cooling is the one combination worth a pressure test.

How much does it cost to get rid of an aircond smell?

If the cause is a stale drain, a normal service at RM90 per unit usually clears it. If the coil and blower have mould — the common case — a chemical wash does the job properly: RM130 for 1.0 HP up to RM250 for 3.0 HP wall-mounts. Checking is free, and we tell you which one your unit actually needs.

Is aircond mould harmful?

A mouldy unit blows air across active growth, which most people notice as smell and some — particularly sensitive or asthmatic family members — feel as irritation. Without making medical claims, the practical advice is simple: air you sleep in should not be passing over visible mould, and removing it is a routine, inexpensive job.
