Aircond Noises: What Rattles, Hisses and Gurgles Are Telling You

By Mavis Eco Cool technicians · Updated 24 August 2026

Airconds narrate their problems. A unit that has changed its sound has changed its condition — the trick is knowing which noises are harmless quirks and which are the machine asking you to stop and call someone. Here is the field guide, sound by sound.

The sound-to-cause table

SoundUsual causeUrgency
Rattling / vibratingLoose front panel or casing screw, debris touching the blower, or an outdoor unit vibrating against its bracketLow — but worth fixing before it shakes something else loose
Buzzing / hummingElectrical: a struggling contactor, a weak capacitor trying to start the compressor, or a fan motor under strainMedium — a hum that ends in a click with no cooling is a classic capacitor sign
HissingBrief hiss at start or stop is normal refrigerant equalising; a new, continuous hiss with weaker cooling can be gas escapingMedium-high — pair it with the gas leak signs
Gurgling / bubblingRefrigerant flow noise, or air trapped in the condensate drain; constant gurgling plus drips points at the drainLow-medium — see aircond leaking water
ClickingOne click at start/stop is relays doing their job; rapid or repeated clicking without startup is a relay, board or capacitor problemMedium — repeated clicking with no start deserves a same-day look
Grinding / squealingFan-motor bearings wearing out, indoors or outHigh — bearings do not heal; run to failure and the motor seizes
Thumping / bangingAn out-of-balance fan, often from a blade caked with dirt on one side, or something inside the outdoor unitHigh — switch off; an unbalanced fan destroys its own bearing fast

The three sounds that mean switch off now

  1. Grinding or metallic scraping — metal is touching metal somewhere it should not.
  2. Banging from the outdoor unit — a loose or unbalanced part is hammering the housing at speed.
  3. Buzzing plus a burning smell — electrical overheating; switch off at the breaker, not just the remote, and see what each aircond smell means.

Sounds that are usually nothing

Soft clicks at start and stop, a whoosh of airflow when the fan changes speed, creaking from plastic panels expanding and contracting with temperature, brief refrigerant swoosh after shutdown, and the outdoor unit’s normal fan drone. Inverter units also legitimately change pitch as they ramp — a rising and falling hum through the day is the design working, not a fault.

A noise that appeared right after servicing

Usually a panel or filter frame refitted slightly off, and occasionally a cable tie or screw left loose. Whoever serviced it should return and put it right without charge — ours come back under the workmanship warranty written on the receipt.

What a noise call costs

Checking is free. A loose-panel fix is often nothing or next to nothing; a fan-blade clean that cures a wobble is part of a wash from RM90–RM130; motors, capacitors and bearings are quoted on site before any work, with honest advice when a part costs more than an old unit deserves — see aircond repair in KL & Selangor.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my outdoor aircond unit so loud at night?

Night quiet makes the existing sound more audible, but a genuinely louder condenser usually means a fan out of balance, worn fan bearings, something vibrating against the housing, or a compressor working harder than it should — often because the coil is dirty. If neighbours can hear it, it is worth a free check before something wears through.

Is a hissing aircond dangerous?

A short hiss when the unit starts or stops is normal refrigerant pressure equalising. A new, continuous hiss — especially with weaker cooling — can be refrigerant escaping, which is not a household danger in split-unit quantities but does mean the unit is losing its charge and should be leak-tested promptly.

My aircond became noisy right after servicing. Why?

The most common cause is a front panel, filter frame or casing refitted slightly out of position, which then buzzes or rattles with airflow. Whoever serviced it should come back and reseat it at no charge — for our jobs that is covered by the workmanship warranty on the receipt.

How much does it cost to fix a noisy aircond?

Checking is free. Loose panels cost little or nothing, a dirty unbalanced fan is usually cured by a wash from RM90, and parts such as fan motors or capacitors are quoted on site before any work starts.
