Aircond Compressor Failure: Signs, Costs and When to Stop Paying

By Mavis Eco Cool technicians · Updated 24 August 2026

The compressor is the heart of the system and the most expensive part in it — which is exactly why “compressor rosak” is both the diagnosis owners fear most and the one most worth double-checking. This guide covers the real warning signs, the cheaper faults that impersonate a dead compressor, and the honest arithmetic of repairing versus replacing at every age.

What the compressor does

It sits in the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant around the loop, compressing it so it can dump the room’s heat outside. When it stops, everything stops: the fans may spin and the lights may glow, but no cold happens.

The warning signs

A meaningful share of “dead compressor” verdicts we are asked to second-opinion turn out to be something far cheaper: a failed run capacitor, a cooked contactor, a faulty inverter board, or a refrigerant problem starving the compressor. All of them can produce a unit that hums and will not cool. The difference between those diagnoses is a few hundred ringgit versus a replacement conversation — so the compressor gets condemned in our shop only after the electrics test clean and the windings themselves measure faulty. Checking is free, and we would rather find the capacitor.

If it really is the compressor: repair or replace?

Compressors are sealed units — they are replaced, not repaired. Whether that replacement is worth doing depends almost entirely on the age of the machine around it:

Unit ageOur usual advice
Under 5 yearsCheck the warranty card first. Compressors often carry longer manufacturer coverage than the rest of the unit, and an in-warranty claim through the official brand channel beats paying anyone — including us. If we inspect it and believe it is claimable, we say so.
5–8 yearsReplacement of the compressor is often still worth it on a good unit — quoted per model, decided against the price of a new unit, in front of you.
8–12 yearsGenuinely case by case: the compressor may be replaceable, but coils, motors and boards of the same age are next in line. We put both numbers on the table.
Over 12 years (or any R22 unit)Almost always replace the unit. A compressor job on a retired platform is money nobody should take from you — the R22 guide covers why.

What things cost

Checking is free. A capacitor or contactor is a small quoted part. A compressor replacement is quoted per model — it is the largest repair we do, which is why it comes with the age conversation above rather than a reflex quote. A new unit installed starts from RM250 labour (1.0 HP) — see aircond installation — and our workmanship warranty on major repairs is 6 months, on new installations 12 months, written on the receipt.

How to not be here again

Most compressor deaths are downstream of years of strain: dirty condensers running hot, chronic low gas from unfixed leaks, and endless short cycling. Regular servicing keeps the strain off — that is the entire, boring secret of compressor longevity, covered in how often to service your aircond.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an aircond compressor last?

In Malaysian conditions a compressor commonly runs 10 to 15 years when the unit is serviced and the refrigerant charge stays correct. What shortens that life is chronic strain: a dirty condenser running hot, low gas from an unfixed leak, and constant short cycling — all preventable.

Can an aircond compressor be repaired?

No — household compressors are hermetically sealed and are replaced, not repaired. The real decision is whether replacing the compressor makes sense against the age of the unit around it, which is a conversation about numbers we have with you before anything is ordered.

My unit hums but does not cool. Is the compressor dead?

Not necessarily, and this is exactly the symptom worth a second opinion: a failed capacitor, a burnt contactor or a faulty board produces the same hum-and-no-cold for a fraction of the cost. We condemn a compressor only after the electrics test clean and the windings themselves measure faulty. Checking is free.

Does the manufacturer warranty cover the compressor?

Often for longer than the rest of the unit — multi-year compressor coverage is common, but terms vary by brand, model and purchase date, so check the warranty card first. If your unit is within coverage, claim through the official brand channel; if we inspect it and believe it is claimable, we tell you instead of charging you.

Is it worth replacing the compressor on a 12-year-old aircond?

Almost never. At that age the coils, motors and boards are as old as the failed compressor, and the money is better put toward a new, efficient R32 unit — installation starts from RM250 labour. We will say this to your face even though the repair would pay us more.
