Aircond Keeps Cutting On and Off: Short Cycling Explained

An aircond that starts, runs a few minutes, cuts out, then starts again is short cycling — and it is worth taking seriously, because every start is the hardest moment of a compressor’s life. A unit that should cycle a few times an hour but is doing it every few minutes is wearing itself out fast while cooling badly and burning extra electricity.
First, rule out normal behaviour
Inverter units are supposed to ramp up and down smoothly rather than stop-start — if yours whirs quieter and louder through the day, that is the design working. Non-inverter units legitimately stop when the room reaches temperature. Short cycling means the compressor genuinely cuts out and restarts every few minutes without the room ever getting properly cold.
The causes, in the order we find them in KL
1. A condenser that cannot reject heat
The outdoor unit’s whole job is dumping the room’s heat outside. When its coil is furred with dust, lint and cooking grease, pressure climbs until the high-pressure or thermal protection trips the compressor. It cools down, restarts, climbs again — the classic cycle. The fix is simply cleaning the condenser coil, which is part of a proper service.
2. The KL condo ledge problem: a heat-soaked condenser
This one is everywhere in Klang Valley high-rises. Condensers mounted on enclosed balconies, in air-con ledges behind louvres, or stacked two and three to a bay end up re-breathing their own hot exhaust. By mid-afternoon the ledge air is far above ambient, the unit cannot reject heat into it, and the protection trips — which is why the complaint is so often “it works fine at night but keeps cutting off at 3pm.” Cleaning helps at the margins; sometimes the real fix is airflow — clearing the louvres, re-spacing units, or re-siting a condenser that was always going to cook in that spot. 3. A weak run capacitor
The capacitor gives the compressor its starting shove. As it ages, the compressor starts, struggles, and trips on overload within seconds or minutes — often with a hum-then-click sound (what each sound means). Cheap part, quick swap, and one of the most satisfying fixes in the trade.
4. Refrigerant out of range
Both too little gas (a leak — see the 6 signs) and too much (an overcharged top-up from a previous visit) push pressures outside the window the protections allow. This is diagnosed with gauges in minutes, and it is one more reason blind top-ups are a bad buy.
5. Sensor and thermostat faults
A drifting room sensor, or one knocked out of position against the coil, convinces the unit the room is cold when it is not. On units with fault memory this often shows as a sensor code — worth reading before touching anything else (how to read the blink code).
6. An oversized unit
