R22 Aircond in Malaysia: The Phase-Out, and What Owners Should Do

If your aircond was installed before roughly 2012, there is a good chance it runs on R22 — a refrigerant the whole world, Malaysia included, is retiring. Nothing about that requires panic: a working R22 unit can keep working. But the moment it needs gas, the economics change completely, and owners who do not know this end up pouring money into a dead end. Here is the honest picture.

First: check whether your unit is actually R22

Read the nameplate sticker on the outdoor unit — it states the refrigerant. As a rough guide, units installed before about 2010 are usually R22, 2010–2016 mostly R410A, and 2015 onwards R32. What the phase-out actually means

R22 is an HCFC — an ozone-depleting refrigerant being retired worldwide under the Montreal Protocol. Malaysia has been restricting R22 imports for years under its HCFC phase-out programme, with supply quotas shrinking toward elimination. In practice, for an owner, it means three things:

The gas is getting scarcer and dearer. Shrinking legal supply means rising prices and more counterfeit or reclaimed gas of uncertain quality in the market.
Nobody makes R22 units anymore. Parts support for 15-year-old machines is thinning at the same time.
No new money should chase old gas. Every ringgit spent refilling R22 buys time on a machine the industry has already retired.

Why an R22 top-up is usually dead money

An R22 unit that needs gas has a leak — refrigerant is never consumed, only lost (see the 6 gas leak signs). So the real purchase is: expensive, scarce gas, plus a leak repair, on a machine that is typically 12–15 years old with worn bearings, tired insulation and an inefficient compressor by modern standards. Even done properly, you have restored an old, power-hungry unit. That can occasionally be worth it — but rarely, and we will say so plainly when it is not.

Can I convert an R22 unit to a newer gas?

So-called drop-in replacement gases exist, and we do not recommend them for typical residential wall-mounts. The system was engineered for R22 pressures and oil; substitutes change capacity and efficiency, sit in a grey zone for manufacturer support, and put the money into exactly the machine you should be migrating away from. R32 itself can never go into an R22 system — different pressures, different oil, incompatible components.

Repair or replace: the honest maths

R22 unit, cooling fine	Keep running it. Service it normally (wash RM90, chemical wash from RM130). Spend nothing else; plan the eventual replacement unhurried.
R22 unit, minor non-gas fault (capacitor, drain, cleaning)	Usually worth fixing — these are small jobs that do not bet money on scarce gas.
R22 unit, needs gas	Usually replace. The gas-plus-leak-repair bill buys a large slice of a new, efficient R32 unit.

What replacement actually costs

Frequently asked questions

Can I still buy R22 gas in Malaysia?

Supply still exists but it is shrinking under the national HCFC phase-out, prices keep rising, and quality in the open market is increasingly uncertain. Our standing advice is to stop investing in R22 gas: run a healthy unit as-is, and put refill money toward replacement instead.

Can R32 be put into my old R22 aircond?

No. R32 runs at different pressures with a different oil, and the components are incompatible. There is no safe shortcut that turns an R22 machine into an R32 one — conversion in any real sense means replacing the unit.

My R22 unit still cools fine. Should I replace it now?

No — run it. A healthy R22 unit needs nothing but normal servicing, and there is no rule forcing it out of your house. The phase-out only changes the decision at the moment it needs gas or a major repair; until then, keep the coil clean and enjoy it.
