Ice on Your Aircond: Why It Freezes and What to Do Right Now

Ice on an aircond looks paradoxical — the machine that cools the room has frozen itself. Mechanically it is simple: the evaporator coil is designed to run cold but above freezing, and two things can push it below zero — too little air moving across it, or too little refrigerant inside it. Everything else is detail.
Cause one: airflow starvation
The coil absorbs heat from the air the fan drags across it. Cut that airflow and the coil has nothing to absorb, so its temperature dives and the moisture condensing on it freezes instead of draining. The usual suspects, in the order we find them:
- Choked filters — the classic. Two months of Malaysian dust is enough.
- A coil or blower matted with biofilm — the airflow path itself is furred shut; a chemical wash is the cure, not a filter rinse.
- A failing blower motor running slower than it should — often audible first; see what each sound means.
- Blocked return — furniture or curtains pressed against the intake.
Cause two: low refrigerant
Less refrigerant in the loop means lower pressure in the evaporator, and lower pressure means a colder coil — cold enough to frost even with good airflow. And since refrigerant is never consumed, a low charge always traces back to a leak. Why you must not keep running it
Three escalating problems. First, an iced coil cannot cool — you are paying full electricity for zero output. Second, the melt flood: when the ice lets go it overwhelms the drain tray and ends up on your wall and floor (see aircond leaking water). Third and most expensive: refrigerant that should boil to vapour in a frozen evaporator can return to the compressor still liquid, and compressors are not built to pump liquid — that is how an icing problem graduates into a compressor failure.
What we do on an icing call
- Thaw and dry the unit, then run it and watch the coil behaviour.
- Check the airflow chain — filters, coil face, blower speed, return path.
- Pressure test the refrigerant circuit; if it is low, find the leak before any talk of gas.
- Quote whatever the fix is — wash, motor, leak repair — before doing it. Checking is free.
What the fix costs
If it is dirt: a normal wash is RM90 and a chemical wash from RM130 per wall-mount. If it is gas: R32 top-up from RM150 and R410A from RM180, only after the leak is found and fixed, with the leak repair quoted on site. Frequently asked questions
Can I just let the ice melt and keep using the aircond?
Let it thaw fully, wash the filters, and one restart is a fair test. If ice returns, stop — the unit is telling you it has an airflow or refrigerant problem, and every frozen run risks the compressor, the most expensive part in the system. Get it checked; checking is free.
Will topping up the gas fix an aircond that freezes?
Only if low refrigerant is actually the cause, and only if the leak that made it low is found and fixed first. Many icing units we see are airflow problems — dirty filters, a furred coil, a slow blower — where a gas top-up would have been money for nothing. That is why the pressure test comes before any recommendation.
Why is there ice on the copper pipe outside?
Frost on the small pipe at the outdoor unit is a strong pointer to a refrigerant-side problem — the pressure in the circuit is too low, usually from a leak — rather than a dirty filter. It is one of the most useful things you can photograph and send us before a visit.
How much does it cost to fix a freezing aircond?
Checking is free. Dirt-related freezing is cured by a wash: RM90 normal, chemical wash from RM130.
